My imagination, curiosity, and love of nature and animals have been with me throughout my life. While I have explored many different art media, I became interested in combining watercolor with pen and ink while attending the Salisbury College of Art and Design in England. Watercolor is applied to the paper first, giving the freedom of bringing the painting to life with the pen and ink in just the right places. This process allows the wet brush watercolor to blend in its own way, producing interesting shades of color. The ink added with an old fashion nib pen gives definition to the painting and brings out the watercolors. This combination results in a loose flowing image with an oriental flair.
As a graphic artist for many years, I acquired a great skill in translating a client's wishes into successful viewed images. The enrichment and challenge of working with a client combined with a talent for capturing the look and feel of wildlife animals and pets have allowed me to work as a custom artist in various media. In addition to watercolor and ink, I have worked with ceramic paints on tiles, plates, and other various clay shapes. My love for animals has resulted in using them as models for drawings and unique custom pet art. I particularly enjoy concentrating on the eyes to give the animal a personality of its own.
Since moving to Bainbridge Island I have found wonderful people with wonderful pets. You can often find me walking my dog Winslow through the country roads of Bainbridge Island.
Betty-Ann tells us:
Whether it is painting, drawing, designing or working in ceramics, my art has always been with animals in some way, shape, or form. My art can range from doing a drawing study of new born guinea pigs to sitting in a field painting sheep and their lambs as they eat. I find the best place to draw them is near their water source. I was surprised how fast sheep move on down the field while eating. I have forever had a love of animals as I do for my art work. Since an early age, I have shared my life with animals. When quite young, I brought home a gray squirrel cradled in my arms that had been knocked out while escaping from dogs (My parents quickly took it away form me in fear it might awaken and bite me). Then there was the time I found a large gray mouse outside and brought it to my mother's morning coffee meeting which she was having with her friends. Surprisingly enough, the coffee ended quickly. One lady was able to jump over two chairs that were blocking my baby brother from coming into the kitchen. I got into BIG trouble that day. I never did stop bringing all kinds of animals home.
As I am sure it is with you, there are many more stories, sad and happy, we could share about our animal friends. I truly love to hear you talk about your pets. It gives me an image which I try to capture as I create its portrait. It is important to me to create your pet as you see and feel about him. In some paintings, I am able to pick up the aura of the animal and it comes out in my work.
